POLICIES

revised on 8/14/2023

The founders of Lakeside Cemetery envisioned Lakeside Cemetery as a place of sanctuary, solitude, quiet adornment, and natural beauty. In keeping with this vision, and to ensure the safety of our staff and guests, the Board of Trustees has established the following policies.

IMPORTANT DATES:

March 1 through October 31:

  • Seasonal grave decorations and live plant materials are permitted in plant stands.

  • Wreaths or displays on tripod stands are prohibited, except during the Friday before
Memorial Day through the Wednesday following Memorial Day. (SEE BELOW for details.)

  • On November 1, representatives of Lakeside Cemetery Association will begin removing and
discarding spring and summer grave decorations.

November 1 through February 28/29:

• Evergreen and Winter Holiday displays are permitted in plant stands or attached to tripods. • If a tripod is used, it must be anchored in such a way that it will not tip over or blow away. • On March 1, representatives of Lakeside Cemetery Association will begin removing and discarding winter and evergreen grave decoration

The Friday before Memorial Day through the Wednesday following Memorial Day:

  • Planters and decorations may be placed on the ground or on tripod stands. All items
(including tripods) must be anchored in such a way that they will not tip over or blow away.

  • On the Thursday following Memorial Day, representatives of Lakeside Cemetery Association
will begin removing and discarding tripods and grave decorations that are still on the
    ground or on tripods.

  • Items may not be attached (taped, glued, etc.) to any portion of any columbarium. *

  • Items may not be placed on the top of any columbarium. *

GRAVE SITES and GRAVE SITE MONUMENTS

  • PLANT STANDS AND PLANTERS:
o Plant stands must be purchased from Lakeside Cemetery.
o Up to two plant stands are permitted on a single grave space. (Ideally, concrete plant stand holes will be installed as part of the monument/marker foundation. Otherwise, plant stands must be placed in the ground next to, and in line with, the monument/marker.) *
o The plant stands are the “home” for all grave decorations and planters. *
o All planters must be placed in plant stands, not on the ground, except for the Friday before Memorial Day through the Wednesday following Memorial Day. *
o Flags up to 12” x 18” are permitted in planters, IF anchored securely. *
o Solar lights are allowed IF they are mounted on a firm shaft that is securely inserted into a planter in a plant stand, and they do not extend more than 6” above the other content in the planter. *
o Decorations may not be hung from any plant stand or planter. *
o Balloons, streamers, wind socks, pinwheels, shepherd’s hooks, and birdhouses are not permitted in planters. *
o Plant stands that are damaged or unused for one year may be removed by cemetery representatives.*

  • MONUMENTS:
o Items may not be attached (taped, glued, etc.) to any portion of a monument.
o Items may not be placed on the top of a monument. *
o Items may not be placed on the foundation of a monument. *

  • LIVE PLANTS:
o The use of live plants is encouraged. Plants must be maintained by their owners.
o Planters containing plants that are no longer living may be removed and disposed of by cemetery representatives.

  • ARTIFICIAL PLANTS OR FLOWERS:
o Artificial plants and flowers are permitted in planters, IF they are anchored securely.
o Planters containing tattered and faded artificial plants and flowers may be removed and disposed of by cemetery representatives.

  • IN GROUND PLANTINGS:
o In-ground plantings of any kind (trees, flowers, shrubs, etc.) are prohibited.*

REMOVAL AND/OR DISPOSAL OF ITEMS

  • Lakeside Cemetery Association representatives have the right to remove and dispose of grave
decorations that violate established policies. *

  • Items that are removed will either be disposed of, or saved for pickup. This decision will be
made at the discretion of cemetery representatives.

  • The “pick-up location” for items that have been removed and saved is inside the box beside
the door to Lakeside’s office OR on the ground between Lakeside’s garage and dumpster.

LIABILITY

  • Lakeside Cemetery does not assume any liability for decorations placed at gravesites.
There have been occasions when planters and decorations have been stolen. Families should
take this into consideration when selecting and purchasing decorations for gravesites.

* These policies were enacted to ensure guest and staff safety, and/or accommodate lawn-mowing constraints.

** These Grave Decoration Policies are subject to change.

The Board of Trustees has discretion to make amendments as it deems necessary.
